Swing Set Safety

Warmer weather means more time outdoors for your little ones and oftentimes involves adventures on a swing set. We’re going to walk you through steps you can take to make sure your kids are safe while they’re swinging, climbing, and sliding.

1. Make sure the swing set is assembled correctly.

We know swing sets can be a little complicated to build, but proper assembly is a must if it’s going to be safe enough to use. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer’s manual and test the swing set’s ability to bear weight before letting your kids play.

2. Take inventory every year.

Over time, swing sets can rust, splinter or generally decay depending on the materials used to build them, so it’s a good idea to do a yearly once-over to assess any wear-and-tear that may have occurred.

Keep an eye out for:

• - Uneven, sharp, or splintered surfaces
• - Damaged connective parts
• - Rusty/brittle spots

3. Review safety guidelines.

• - For children less than three years of age, purchase a toddler swing set with enclosed sides.
• - Only purchase slides that are less than 10 feet long, with a maximum deck height of 5 feet. This is the maximum height at which a parent standing on the ground can assist a child.
• - If possible, set the swing set up in a shaded area to avoid overheating of metal or plastic parts.
• - Ensure enough room for clearance behind and in front of the swings.
• - Provide a soft landing area at the base of the slide.
• - Stay vigilant! As you probably already know, kids move quickly. Even if you follow all safety precautions, children still need adult supervision at all times when playing on a swing set.

4. Have fun!

Swing sets are supposed to be fun, not stressful. Follow these safety tips to avoid needless worry so you and your family can play and have outdoor fun together for many years to come.
